Plural noun: Rascality of Sludgewhips

Backstory

Not tameable, truly wild. Halflings have tried and failed to domesticate for agriculture reasons.

Weakness

Because they live in mucus-heavy colonies, when they hear the subsonic sound of an abyssal render or owlbear they are prone to scattering to avoid predation or destruction of their colony. They also have poor eyesight. Can sense thunderstorms, and will rush to lower layers when they sense one. Or if they sense electricity via other means.

Personality

They will chase you for no apparent reason. When you run away they will chatter and throw mucus. When they are really riled up, they will crack their flesh whips, breaking the sound barrier. Although they can be dangerous, they are culturally conceived of as a “more talk than action” type of animal, or that their “bark is worse than their bite.” Will start making noises at you and throwing mucus at you before they start running at you. They can give a really good stink-eye glare. They then do that victory cackle if you run.

Environment

It is a water- and air-friendly reptile in the Canopy, Twilight, and in the Abyss. They journey into the Abyss to molt, mate (with scary noises, hibernate). They hunt and mark territory in the Twilight. They bask in the Canopy slime globs, sensing prey far below, then glide down to hunt. They can run on hind legs. Versatile: swim, glide, run, climb.

Element

Can sense electric fields (like a platypus), through any wet, fleshy surface. Creature uses symbiosis with plants to sense, tapping into how plants communicate with each other through nerve-like electrical impulses. This is all made possible because the creature coevolved with Maw plants to predate their pests. Leave a slick trail from mucous filled pores in their skin, like a slug or lungfish, in order to facilitate its electrical sense. It is probably gross to eat.

Weapon

Skin whip from its frill bone. Can whip out the frill and arm flaps to glide some distance. Can do a small number of whips to stun or damage prey, or it can do a large number, up to a dozen to function like a bola and ensnare prey. Whips easily pull off. Whips regenerate.

Reptile

They grow as long as they are alive. Most are small, there are a few big ones hunters have seen, and my grovemates’ origin grove’s friend swears that flee saw a huge one once.
