This titanic creature is a deadly predator in the Abyssal layer which hunts through vibrations generated in the Twilight layer and above. Its devastating attack is to send tentacles from its massive body in the Abyss up into the upper layers. The tentacles are sent up quickly but stealthily and, once in position, flash patterns and lights that confuse and terrify it’s prey sending them into either panic or paralysis. The Render then proceeds to destroy everything in the vicinity causing its prey to fall through into the Abyss where it can be devoured, thus earning its name. In this way, the Render destroys trees, Dreamers of the Maw, and Halflings alike. Fortunately, Renders are very rare.

Once thought to strike at random, it's been demonstrated that it appears to be attracted to a specific range of sound mostly from the Twilight layer although it will strike higher than that. Single travelers and small groups up to about a dozen individuals seem to be avoided as are camps and settlements above about two dozen. It's not known why this is the case although it's speculated that smaller groups do not generate enough volume to reach down to the Abyss and the larger groups are either too confusing to easily target prey or too dangerous.

There are tales of conflict between Renders and Dreamers, including the famous tongue twister about how Sapling Strockling, Thrice Struck did strike an Abyssal Render and destroy it.

Details from DW Game:

Tentacles: Highly elastic more like an earthworm or octopus rather than common assumption of being snakelike.
Suction: It's believed that the AR grabs it's prey, and everything else, through suction cups on the tentacles. In reality it has thousands of razor sharp retractable spikes--similar to cat claws--that grab and rend, pulling it's prey down into the Abyss.
