The Death Lantern is a symbiote comprised of a transparent slug and a bioluminescent slime mold. They reside in caves and dark fissures throughout the Abyssal Layer. They range in size from that of a halflings thumb to the length of a forearm. They cling to the walls, ceiling, and floors emitting a pale, cadaverous green light. The slime mold pulls out organic material from the environment and breaks it down for use by the slug. The slug, in turn, provides the slime mold greater mobility and range than it would otherwise. The digestive process generates a smell strongly reminiscent of a rotting corpse. While that smell would be expected to attract many species of flies and maggots, in fact it works as a powerful repellent and is sometimes harvested for that purpose but only in extreme situations as the cure is generally considered to be worse than what it is repelling.
